Week 3 - Mar 15-21

Hey everyone. I had to get my supplies a day early because my parents are coming to visit. Yaaaaay! So I did even better this week than the other weeks but I had to make up for going over just a bit for the last few weeks. Smile. I'm still learning how to do all this but I have learned a lot already which I will talk about in a later post.

Oh! And keep in mind I am not including toiletries or household items like t.p. and the like. Plus it is my birthday today so I'm feeling pretty super star today. Maybe the good vibes helped at the store.

Soooooo here is what I got this week in groceries:
Organic Milk - nonfat
Organic Eggs - cage free :0)
Canned Mexican Stewed Tomatoes
Avocados
Green Peppers (these went down in price since last week, thank God!)
Oranges
Kiwis
Yellow Onions
Russet Baked Potatoes
Carrots
Cilantro

Total Spent this week: $20.13
Total Spent this month: $75.43
total Spent this year: $75.43

Menu Plan
Tu - eat out with parents (yay)
W - Roast Turkey, boiled cabbage (some might be like gross but this is just something I grew up eating and it's so German and good, both a winner at our house), cucumber tomato salad
Th - Steak, baked potatoes, salad

Week 2 - March 7 -14

Hello all. It's me again. Here on the experimental budget of $100 a month for groceries. This week was a good week. Earlier in the week I was at Target and got 2 Jennie-O Turkeys for an amazing price. They were originally $9.03 and $9.73 and both had a "take $3.00 off" sticker. Yaaaay! That's $6.03 and $6.73 for more than 12 lbs of turkey. I was really excited but it will bring the next two weeks down a bit budget wise to recoup the larger meat find but I have enough meat for a while with those birds! Plus we were able to eat for like a week on the Cuban beans and rice from last week so this week some of the things on the menu plan are the same but moved around.

I have to be fair and let you know I have been eating some of our stocked items too so we aren't eating just chicken but like tonight, for example, was Rosemary and Thyme Encrusted Chicken, salad (greens and cucumber from last week and items from this week), and Tangy Sugar Snap Peas (I had the peas in the freezer already). Sooo I can say it has actually been good so far to eat through some of the stuff we got in stead of finding it in the freezer past the ummm yummy date.

So here was what I got for the week of March 7-14
Turkey
Bananas
Organic Carrots
Puffed Red Wheat Cereal (got that at a steal of $1.00 per 12 oz bag. I went ahead and got 2)
Cubed Butternut Squash
Vine Tomatoes
Zucchini
Cabbage
Potatoes

Menu Plan
Tu - Rosemary and Thyme Encrusted Chicken
W - Leftovers
Th - Chicken Noodle Soup (with pasta)
F - Egg Drop Soup/ Asian Veggetables
S - Chicken Vegetable Soup
Su - Leftovers
M - Spaghetti, Garlic Bread (already had the stuff for this)

So my total with the Turkeys was $29.07. I already went over a bit for last week but I knew the meat purchase would put me over for this week. That means I'll be super frugal for the next couple of grocery runs. So far I have spent $55.30. So I'll be spending about $20 for the next two weeks. Buuuuut my parents are coming to see us next week so we'll have to see how that turns out. I don't want them to feel like they're starved but I also want to show them that I can do the $100 a month without sacrificing having yummy, whole foods.

So that's how I see it... it's a Phillipsology.

THE EXPERIMENT

Soooo here it goes. My little experiment. We, at the Phillips house, are working VERY hard to own at least 20% of our house by September. In order to do that we are going to really have to work for it. So that's what we have been doing.

It is our second mortgage that we transferred to an unsecured loan from a credit union that has us about $7500 in debt as of today. We have already chopped 15 years off our primary mortgage. Yay to my husband for being incredibly clever and pulling that one off! I think he's pretty amazing!!! OK back to the story. D and I have been HATING debt thanks to Dave Ramsey. Go check out his website... like NOW. He has some very practical advice on the matter of debt and while he has A LOT of money he chooses to use his time to help people get out of debt. A rare bird in my book.

Soooo in an effort to demolish our debt I am having a little experiment in our family. I have the task of handling our groceries and inspired by The Cheapskate Cook, I am trying to eat healthy, whole foods on $25 a week. I'll do a little post about my progress each week and post my findings.

Week 1
March 1-6

Oganic Eggs
Brown Rice - 6 lbs
Jarred Red Bell Pepper
Whole Chicken
Sweet Clemintines - 3 lbs
Organic Salad Greens
Celery
Cucumber

Total Spent: $26.29

Menu Plan
Tu - Cuban Beans & Rice
W - Leftovers
Th - Frozen Pizza
F - Roasted Rosemary Chicken
Sa - Chicken Noodle Soup or Chicken Enchiladas
Su - Leftovers
M - Egg Drop Soup/ Asian Veggies

I went over $1.29. Insert sad face! I worked really hard and I went over. Arg! I'm not going to let it stop me before I have even really started. Sooo I'm just working with $1.23 less next week.

So THAT'S just how I see it... a phillipsology.

Fabulous February!

Ahhhh the love month! Here are some highlights from the month that is all about l-o-v-e:

- Valentineish weekend at Callaway Gardens in Georgia

- A Weekend at Ft. Payne
- A Little Experiment

Callaway Gardens, GA

D and I had a wonderful time taking the weekend off from side work and well, everything to get away and just enjoy one another. This was SUCH a great time. I'm often reminded how much I treasure D and who God has made him. He is just amazing. I'm so blessed to be given a husband who actually enjoys talking to me (often) and who has a character I can both thrust and respect. I won't share all we did (wink, wink) but we played a little blindfold 'guess again' candy game. And of course he did really well (he's such a competitor!). And we walked all around Callaway Gardens (thanks for the suggested place Amy!) and had an all around fantastic time. I gave D a one hour (timed, mind you) massage so my hope was he would let all the stress of this season in our lives just go away, even if just for a night. I think I got what I was aiming for. D and I swap who plans the V-day extravoganza each year so it was fun to plan this one for him. We know when the chill-rens come we won't be able to take these little trips so we fully intend on enjoying them now. Our trips up to this point have been Helen, Georgia (a little German style town in the mountains) and The Victoria Inn in Oxford, Alabama. We have not had to go into debt to have these fun little outings because thanks to Dave Ramsey, who we totally respect, we don't buy things we don't have the money for. I know, I know....genius!

Ft. Payne
We had a lovely weekend in Ft. Payne with a ministry we have had the pleasure to work with and are very involved with, Four Corners Ministries. Their goal is to build a comprehensive children's village in Uganda. It's a wonderful ministry if you have never heard of them.

Experiment
The rest of the month has been very busy with D and I working on various side projects and the only other very fun development in this Phillips Family is a little experiment. I know it is entirely crazy (perhaps) but I am *attempting* to cook Whole Foods on $25 a week. That's a whopping $100 a month on groceries. I don't know if I'll be able to do it but the next post will outline why, what, how, and anything else I can think of.

That's all there is for this month.

And THAT'S just how we see it..... it's a phillipsology.

Jumpin' January

Welcome back business of life, routine, and cold, cold weather. This year the highlights of January include:

- Spending New Years with the Bengali church in Queens, New York
- Hanging out in New York City with some fantastic friends for about a week
- Back to work for Daniel
- Back to School for Andrea
- A lovely visit from Tonya and Courtney

We'll lay them all out for you.

Bengali Church/New York City
We had the choice to go and spend New Years in Times Square or go to a church service with the Bengali church. Times Square sounded fun but people were out at noon before the ball dropped and you were barricaded in about a 50 foot square and they had some rather 'fun' rules. No drinks, no food, no backpacks. Yikes. So we opted for spending time with the church and it was AMAZING! My friends dressed me up like a beautiful Indian (thanks ladies!) so I felt right at home. We did so many things in New York that it's really hard to out them all down so here are some of our favorite photo highlights from THE trip of the year!

There's our first look at NY City!

Daniel in Pennsylvania on our way up to NYC!

Yummy NY hot dogs. Daniel insisted we have one the first day we were there!

Me in the snow.

My fav spot in NY - The Museum of Natural History. We needed like 3 days to really explore this place. Always another good reason to go back. :0)

Goofy.

Empire State Building!!!

They decorated the place so sweetly.

Pretty....blue....snow....

Rockefellar Center at night the night before New Years!

Me and Daniel looking very Indian. Does that make me double Indian?

Me and Poppy hanging out. Do I look a little light?

Singing during the Bengali service.

Daniel in front of the apple store.

This IS New York Pizza!

I got to see my best friend Shelley from High School. Sooooo great to see her.

Daniel in a basement record store. He thought it was pretty sweet!

I think that about takes care of pictures from January. I'm really happy about getting back into the swing of things. February should be a fantastic month too and I hope we get to see some of our family and friends at our house!

And THAT'S just how we see it..... it's a phillipsology.
